ABOUT iGeo

The International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) is a yearly event that brings together top geography students aged 16 to 19 from all over the world. These bright students, selected to represent their countries, shine among thousands who take part in their own national geography competitions. iGeo includes three parts: a written test, a fun multimedia activity, and fieldwork where students observe and analyze geography firsthand. Alongside the competitions, there are poster presentations, cultural exchanges, and chances for students to make friends with peers from around the globe.

The aims of the Olympiad are to:

  1. Stimulate active interest in geographical and environmental studies among young people.
  2. Contribute positively to debate about the importance of geography as a senior secondary school subject by drawing attention to the quality of geographical knowledge, skills and interests among young people.
  3. Facilitate social contacts between young generation from different countries and in doing so, contribute to the understanding between nations.

iGeo started in 1996 with just five countries and has grown over the years. It used to happen every two years, but now it’s an annual event, except for 2020 when it couldn’t take place because of the Covid-19 pandemic. After moving online for a couple of years, iGeo returned to in-person events in 2023 in Bandung, Indonesia, showing that the spirit of exploring geography together is still strong.

Some iGeo Task Force members gathered at 2023 iGeo Bandung (from left to right): Alexis Alamel (France, 2022), Susan Lomas (co-chair, UK), Samsul Bachri (Indonesia, 2023), Susan Pike (Ireland, 2024), Dubravka Spevec (Croatia), Tomasz Sawicki (Poland), Su-Min Shen (co-chair, Taiwan), Tim Schuring (The Netherland) and Pannee Cheewinsiriwat (Thailand, 2025).
